Friday Spotlight–Another Great New Missions Resource

Check out the latest book by another one of our author’s husband! They Turned the World Upside Down would be a tremendous resource to use in personal or family devotions to make or keep missions and the cause of world evangelism a priority in your life. The review below from Pastor Austin Gardner originally appeared here.

They Turned the World Upside Down

Jeff Bush and the four pastors working in La Plata, Argentia. God is using them greatly. In spite of adversity this men have carried on. One of the churches burned to the ground and the men are pulling together, rebuilding, and doing better than ever. I am very proud of all of them.

I want to encourage you to get Jeff Bush’s newest book:

This is a wonderful book. It was written to be a devotional guide for your family. I hope you are taking the time to teach your children little by little in a family devotional time.

I kept our family devotions very short and tried to make them fun. We would spend less than 15 minutes in family devotions. We averaged 4 times a week. Sometimes we did the devotions in the AM before school and work. Other times we did them in the evenings. For me it was often harder to have evening devotions due to my work and their bed time. I spent lots of evenings away preaching, teaching and counseling but we wanted to have family devotions.

Betty was great at helping me get everything organized. She would have the kids ready. It wasn’t that hard to do. You just have to make the commitment.

I would then read a story to them out of a book. This was good practice for getting them ready to sit still and quietly in church. I would read a chapter out of a biography. They could color, play quietly, etc as long as they sat still and listened.

We would discuss what we read. We read books like this one Jeff has prepared. It is excellent. It has 71 short chapters. Each are about a missionary and the work that God used them to do.

Each story has a Bible verse. You can read the story and your children will soon know more about God and also about serving God with their lives. What a wonderful tool!

We also always read a short passage of Scripture. We would take turns reading. I would read two verses, then Betty, and then the children that could read would read 1 verse. Those that couldn’t read Betty would help read.

Betty would say the verse in short segments and the children would then repeat after her. They were all excited about reading when it was their turn.

Then we would pick one of the prayer cards from our prayer card basket and pray for that family. We would talk about who they were, where they were serving, and ask if the kids remembered them. That was a great way to help keep them focused on doing something for God with their lives also.

Jeff’s book is brought to you by Our Generation Publishing.

I know that it will bless you and help you. Jeff Bush understand missions. He is the director of Vision Baptist Missions. He has been a missionary now for over 15 years. He was used of God to start 4 churches that are still going and growing today. They have a Bible College and radio station also that are being greatly used of God.

Jeff would be a great blessing to have in to preach for you or to hold your mission’s conference. He is one of my heroes. He has a most wonderful family. Mindy is a great wife, mom, and Christian. She helps so many young missionaries and people every where.

This book could also be used in your Christian School or in Sunday School and Children’s Church. When I was a boy I became interested in being a missionary because they told us the missionary story in Vacation Bible School. Today, I fear that very few teachers working at sharing the burden of World Evangelism with their children like they did back in those old Baptist churches in the hills of Tennessee. It sure made a difference in my life.

Each chapter would take 5 to 7 minutes. They were written for this sort of ministry. Get them and use them. I know you will be happy you did.

I also think that you might find yourself learning something about a missionary that you didn’t know. As you help your children grow you just might grow yourself.

The following is a chapter right out of the book so you can get an idea of what you will be purchasing. So after reading this rush on over to Our Generation Publishing and order your book. If you are in charge of the Christian School, Sunday School, or Children’s Church you can order in bulk and save on both shipping and the price of the book.

Day 66.  “Afraid – of What?”

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Though a missionary may be separated from family, friends, and their country, they are not separated from the One for whom they are going. Jesus is always with us in life and in death.

Betty Stam’s father wrote her the following before she was martyred for Christ:

     Afraid? Of what?
To feel the spirit’s glad release?
To pass from pain to perfect peace?
The strife and strain of life to cease?
     Afraid – of that?
      Afraid?  Of what?
Afraid to see the Saviour’s face?
To hear his welcome, and to trace?
The glory gleam from wounds of grace?
     Afraid – Of that?
     Afraid?  Of what?
     A flash, a crash, a pierced heart;
     Darkness, light, oh, Heaven’s art
A wound of His a counterpart
     Afraid – Of that?
     Afraid?  Of what?
To do by death what life could not-
Baptize with blood a stony plot
Till souls shall blossom from the spot?
     Afraid – of that?

It may seem like a huge sacrifice to leave our home and family to go to a foreign land for the sake of the Gospel. We may feel inadequate or unworthy. If we will remember the simple promise that Jesus is with us wherever we go, we can confidently do what the Lord wants.

Before we look at the big picture of leaving everything behind, we can realize right now that God is with us each day. He is with us as we talk to our friends about Him. He is with us as we read His Word. He is with us as we stand up for what is right and as we resist temptation. Recognizing that He is with us in each moment will change the way we live our lives.

Challenge: Spend an entire day purposely thinking, “God is with me right now.”  What are some things that you can change in your behavior, life and attitude knowing that He is with you each and every moment?

I hope you enjoyed that chapter. I hope it blessed you. Now go get your book. If you are a pastor then contact Jeff Bush and invite him to come and preach for you. He will be a blessing to all of your ministry.

They Turned the World Upside Down might just turn your world upside down for the Lord Jesus.

Jeff also has several books in Spanish that you might be interested in if you have a Spanish ministry. Again I know that Jeff Bush and his ministry will be a blessing to you and your church. God bless one and all!
