After much talk about trials and struggling, we know faith is a choice and not a feeling and the peace of God can carry us through great trials. The thing I struggle with is my idea of a Happy Ending.
I really desire everything to “work together for good”. I want a happy ending. But when you are thrown into suffering or trials our enemy’s goal is to get you to lose hope. So what is our hope in the midst of these dark days? We live in a fallen, sin-cursed world. Maybe there isn’t any hope in this life? As we can see in this passage, we have multiple things we can hope in.
1. We can hope in the glory of God.
I have been disillusioned with this one, because I have my own idea of God’s glory. I don’t necessarily agree with how this situation is looking. This doesn’t seem to be giving God glory. It is not up to me to say or decide what does or doesn’t give him glory. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.” Isaiah 55:8
2. We glory in tribulations
This is a tough one. It’s easy for me to say this because I haven’t been through your trials. How can we rejoice in trials or suffering? One reason is that we are privileged to suffer for Christ’s sake.
“For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;”
this is not something to be taken lightly. It doesn’t feel like a privilege, but when we look at the life of Jesus we see He suffered a great deal. We see in Hebrews 11:38 the faith chapter, referring to those who suffered for Christ, “(Of whom the world was not worthy:) …”. We don’t even know their names, talk about an amazing reunion with their savior.
3. We can trust God our father through trials because He promises to work in us”…tribulation worketh patience; And patience (endurance) experience; and experience (character), hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; (does not disappoint us) because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” As we walk through trials our endurance is strengthened, when we experience trials through our lifetime it produces character which produces hope. All of this happens because Gods love has been born into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The same resurrecting Power that gives us hope in Eternal life is what produces hope in our hearts.
Hope is what carries us through to keep going, knowing with complete confidence that Christ is working in us and through us for His Glory.
