“A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.”
― Elbert Hubbard
There are a few things that every missionary always dreads to hear over the phone as they are serving in a foreign country; one of those being a possible major health complication of a parents. When we received this call many things began to pop up in our minds, automatically assuming the worst, but hoping for the best. At this point we knew God had placed us in India, at this time, and this was all in God’s timing! So, all we could do at this point was wait for God to intervene…
Jim sent out an email to some of our closest missionary friends asking for prayer and it wasn’t long until we got a call from a very precious friend to our ministry. Trent Cornwell and his wife Stephanie were on their way, from Atlanta, to South Carolina to be with Jim’s Dad as he waited on some test results to come in later that day. Trent and Stephanie knew that if we were in the states…that was right where we would be!
I tell you that story because I wanted to encourage you, as senders, that you have a VERY important role in the ministry and life of a missionary. I wanted to give you a few things, from a missionary’s view, of how you can make a big impact right where you are.
1.) Know them on a personal level…
When on furlough we lived about 2 and half hours away from the Cornwell’s and they always took time to have us in their home, go out to dinner with us, play with our kids, and just spend time with us. We became VERY close friends and we always looked forward to the time that we would be in the Atlanta area. Now that we are in India, we talk to them several times a week and they are involved in almost every facet of our lives
2.) Know them on a spiritual level…
Our conversations, when we were together, were always centered around Jesus and India. You see, Trent and his family have a passion for Jesus and to see souls reached for Christ, just like we do. They are also always asking what they can help us pray about. They have a map of India hanging in their living room so that lost souls are always in front of them. We know that we have a family in Georgia that is praying for us and wants nothing more than to see souls reached for Christ, in India and around the world.
3.) Know them on a ministry level…
We have only been in India for three months and have 4 people that we are building relationships with, Amita, Annu, Das, and Upendra. If you called the Cornwell’s right now, they could tell you their names and all about their lives. You see, they are invested in our ministry and love the people we love. They know our plans for the future and excitedly want to know how they can help. We Skype at least once a week and our topic always ends with a conversation about the future of team India. They are as much a part of the team in the US, as we are in India, if not more. They would down play that idea, but to us, they are of more value than anything we can think of. I ask you to get to know what is going on in the life of the ministry of your missionary.
I urge you to GET INVOLVED. Pick a country you want to know more about…and GET STARTED!! I promise you that any missionary would be completely thrilled to let you into their lives and ministry.
1 Sam. 18:1-3
“And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.”
Jonathan loved David “as his own soul”…how invested are you?
Praying you will get involved,
