I love the book of Genesis! God gives us a beautiful picture of how He created the earth and everything in it, and specifically designed mankind as male and female. He had a perfect plan: to showcase His image through the characteristics of the man and woman – to bring Himself glory.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:26a, 27
As a missionary-sender in the United States, it concerns me that our culture is quickly steering away from God’s divine design in favor of a man-made design. One that allows each person to determine his or her own gender. It really doesn’t come as much of a surprise, since Satan is clever and has always worked hard to destroy God’s plan.
As “women behind the scenes” all across the world, we have a great opportunity and responsibility to point ladies in our sphere of influence back to a Holy God and His design for them (click to tweet).
A look at biblical womanhood
Here are a few of the God-designed core elements at the heart of our womanhood (as adapted from True Woman 101: Divine Design by Nancy Leigh DeMoss & Mary Kassian) :
*she was created as a help meet for man
8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. 9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. 1 Corinthians 11:8-9
Being a helper is part of the way God designed woman. “God created a helper to assist the man in fulfilling his ultimate purpose. Woman helps man glorify God in a way he could not do if she did not exist.” (True Woman 101: Divine Design, p. 85).
*she was created with a characteristic softness
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel… 1 Peter 3:7
The definition of ‘soft’ includes words like – not hard; yielding readily to touch, flexible, pliable, tender, compassionate, and sympathetic. In the verse above, the word ‘weaker’ is used to imply that women are the more vulnerable ones. And according to God, men are to honor women for this trait.
*she was created with the ability to form deep relational bonds
18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. 22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. Genesis 2:18, 22
This doesn’t mean every woman will marry. But God designed woman to assist man “in fulfilling his God-given calling, as his support and helper.” (TW101: Divine Design, p. 73) As a woman, I have to admit I’m a relational person.
*she was created with a welcoming, responsive spirit
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 1 Peter 3:4
Ladies, we were created with an agreeable spirit – one that responds positively to others, accepts direction, and leadership.
*she was created with a special ability to beget and nurture life
She looketh well to the ways of her household… Proverbs 31:27
He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord. Psalm 113:9
As women, we were created with the ability to bear and raise children. We were also given a unique bent toward the home. I like the way Nancy Leigh DeMoss puts it, “A woman has a ‘distinct’ responsibility to manage the home, not an ‘exclusive’ responsibility to do everything in it…He wired woman to be connected to home and relationships in a way man is not.” (p. 81)
No matter where you live, we have an awesome opportunity to share these truths with the women God brings into our lives. Let’s be intentional in sharing the beauty of God’s divine design!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Your design IS beautiful! Help me embrace the characteristics outlined in Your Word that make me uniquely female. Thank You for the opportunity to share these truths with others so they will see You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
