Overwhelmed!!!

When you stop and think about it, life overwhelms us.  We get overwhelmed by our work, and our wants, the people who love us and the people who use us, the stress of deadlines, the due dates on projects, the prospect of the future…..desire overwhelms us, and suffering and death and loss……

Overwhelmed= to throw a dark sheet over or to create darkness; to be wrapped in darkness.

Thought I would share a few points that my husband preached on in how to handle being overwhelmed.  Let us go to Psalm 61:1-8 and notice what David said he would do,.

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.

For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.

Thou wilt prolong the king’s life: and his years as many generations.

He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.

So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.   ~Psalm 61:1-8

1.  David CRIED unto the Lord.   (v. 2)  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

We need to be able to go to the Lord and ask for Him to help us with what is overwhelming us.  We tend at times to go to our friends and “vent” our problems and frustrations.  We need to go to the Lord and turn those things over to Him because He is the one that will help us through.

2.  David STAYED.  (v. 4a)   I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever:

We need to make sure we stay faithful to the Lord when we are overwhelmed.  Abide in Him.  Realize we can’t do anything without Him. As it says in John 15:4-5:

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

3. David TRUSTED in the Lord.  (v. 4b) I  will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.

I know there are times and situations that we go through that we “feel” like the Lord has abandoned us or forsaken us.  Those are the times we need to realize that He HASN’T forgotten us or abandoned us.  We are just so overwhelmed we can see Him.

We cannot forget that the Lord keeps His promises.  We need to trust that He knows what is best for us.  We need to rest in Him.

Matthew 11:28-29 says:

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

4.  David SANG unto the Lord.  So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows. (v. 8)

I find that when I listen to God honoring music and sing it unto Him how much of a release I have.  It is like all those things that have burdened me down has been lifted off.  Once that is done it is like I can get through the day and get what needs to be done, done.

Principles To Live By:

!.  REMIND yourself, there is only one place to turn and that is to God.  Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. Psalm 61:1

2.  RELAY to God what you are experiencing and feeling.

3.  REALIZE God is greater and more powerful than anything you are facing.  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  Psalm 61:2

4.  REMEMBER how God has helped you in the past   For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. (v.3)

5.  REST in God and remain faithful.  I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.  (v.4)

6.  REFLECT on the good people God has place in your life.  For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.  Psalm 61:5

7.  REJOICE no matter the circumstances and remain faithful. Thou wilt prolong the king’s life: and his years as many generations. He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him. So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.  Psalm 61:6-8

    1. This was such a great devotional! I would have loved to hear your husband preach on being overwhelmed. I know we have all felt that way at some time or another. I know there have been many times in my own life when it just feels like no one’s around, not even God, and you just feel like you’re sinking. Psalm 61:2 has been a go-to verse for me during those times.
