Surrendering Fears About My Mission Field

Hello, my name is Nancy Bloom. My husband Kanon and I are church planting missionaries to China. We have been on deputation for 22 months, have our tickets purchased to arrive in China on January 5th and are really looking forward to serving the Lord in China. I am excited to see what the Lord will do with us there.

There will be a lot of changes happening in my life as we move to China. There are some things I am a little nervous and fearful about. We actually will be moving to China, and China will be our new home. When we get there, we will work on getting a house set up. As I think about this, I wonder how living in China will be different than what I am used to. We will also enroll in language school learning Mandarin Chinese. I know it is going to be hard and a lot of work! I think, “Will I be able to get the language down?” I also know that in China there will be a lot of new and strange foods that I will need to try. This may be hard for me. I question, “Will I be able to eat the strange food even if I don’t like some of the dishes?”

As I think about these and other fears, I know I should not let these fears control my thoughts. I need to surrender my fears to the Lord. I need to remember what God says about fear. Over and over again in the Bible we see God telling His people not to fear. Here are a few of many wonderful verses:

Matthew 10:31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.”

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Whether it is living somewhere new, being involved in a new ministry, or going to the mission field, we all have fears. We need to remember to meditate on the Bible. There are so many verses that tell us that the Lord will be with us. God always keeps His promises! Whatever stage of life we are in, we need to remember that the Lord is with us and, therefore, we shouldn’t fear.

We must remember that living in fear is not what God wants us to do. He wants us to live our lives trusting in Him so that we can tell people about what Jesus did for them on the cross. We need to give our fears to the Lord and trust Him. I hope that we all can surrender our fears to the Lord.
