When I was a little girl, my Mom would always ask the same question, and now, as a Mom myself, I TOTALLY understand where she was coming from! She asked, “What else can I do to make this child happy? Stand on my head? Juggle? Nothing seems to please her!!”
When I hear or think about this, I have to ask myself this question: “Where does MY deepest contentment come from?”
The American Heritage Dictionary gives one definition of contentment as, “The state of being contented; satisfied.” Do we ever REALLY feel satisfied? I believe God gives us all a drive to seek out, to do better, to press on. Sadly, I think many of us become wrapped up in our selfish ambitions and forget to remember that tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

1 Timothy 6:6-8 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”
For some people it can take a life-changing event to realize how much time was wasted trying to satisfy themselves when everything they needed was right in front of them all along. I’ve learned in some of my darkest moments that if it were just me and God, I really would have everything I need. We should never forget that ultimately, it is He who provides and He who allows us to have the abilities we have.
Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:25, “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”
Some tend to look at people in less prosperous countries and comment on their lack. What we don’t always hear about is the contentment these people often feel with many aspects of their life. Not every family has a need for large homes, nice cars, name brand clothing or the latest electronic toys. Rather, people residing in countries that we view as lacking still find pleasure in family and the simpler things in life.
So, how do you find contentment in your life? I find it when I’m able to separate myself from the distractions of my day and get into the Word and pray. It seems to put everything in my life back into perspective. It’s so important to have some devotional time with the Lord for this reason. How easy it is for us to forget to slow down and find time to focus on our source of true contentment- The Lord!
So to answer my Mom’s question, “No!” Standing on your head and juggling, in the long run, will not bring TRUE contentment, but I DO know someone who can calm those aching hearts and crying eyes when those days come…and they do!!
“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11
